Are bentleys and rolls royces reliables cars?

banner_man

I'm talkin from the 80s and the early 90s

I'm looking at a 1991 bentley turbo. 30K miles. do you think bentleys are reliable over the long run? like toyotas?

Answer
Both Luxury cars are all made by hand. Bentleys and Rolls Royces dont go down an assembly line. Each car is paintstakingly assembled and finished by one team people. This means that the finished quality is better than excellent. They also take a warranty like no other car. If in case you get a premature engine failure, this same team will be made responsible to fix your engine. Not some mechanic from your local dealer.

Can teenagers have hobby cars?

SecrecyMas

I'm currently 16 and own a Honda, and I'm curious how crazy it would be if I bought an 80s Mercedes to toy around with. I'm not interested in the luxury aspect at all, but I'm very interested in the engines they used back then. I'll start working this summer and keep doing so through the schoolyear, and I live where liability insurance rates are pretty low for teenagers, or anyone for that matter. If I have $1000 right now, and will have about $4000 by October, would it be the worst idea ever to spend $3000 on a 30 year old Mercedes for a weekend hobby? Other cars I'd consider are older Volkswagen TDI's and Volvos. Those are the only 30 year old cars that I still see occasionally on the road.

Answer
Mercedes 300D have bulletproof diesels that last 500K+ miles. At your age, car insurance may be expensive, and insurance for a second car could be expensive, though for an older car, the registration and insurance costs may be significantly lower than a new Honda. My son had a 1972 Mustang as his first car, and it was a combination hobby car and daily driver, but he was careless and let it overheat and cracked the engine block, so as you wish it may be better to have the old car for fun but not make it your daily driver. My son's car registration and insurance was about 1/3 the rates of our newer cars, though if you get a couple of tickets on your record that all goes away, so I'm comforted that you are interested in "safe" not very powerful sedans. Its your money, do as you will. Some folks might consider saving for college, saving for moving out from home, or some other expense associated with change that will come with age. I'd encourage you not to spend all the money you have, but keep some in reserve, if you spend $3K out of $4K, then you have $1K in reserve in case you get stranded somewhere and need a tow and emergency repairs, or some other unpredicted hardship.

Most of all, if you are still living at home with your parents, make sure they are in agreement about supplying a parking place and/or workshop for your hobby project. Until you are 18 you are their dependent and not able to make this choice without their consensus.
