Why did Mercedes-Benz offer diesels back in the 70s and 80s?
Biff
Not that they weren't totally awesome, but luxury + diesel always seemed a little strange to me. Even stranger is that so many sold in the diesel hating US back then.
Answer
mercedes made diesel cars before WWII and have been a mainstay world wide ever since. the old fuel shortages of the 70's be damned 113,116, 123, and 126 bodied mercedes stand on their merits alone
as to the luxury issue a vehicle that gives extremely long life,
agile handling, and a comfortable ride and was very safe if in a accident, plus having lots of style, these cars looked good then and still do now 20 and 30 years later, that was luxury..
now it seems to be how many laptops can be plugged into it or a sound system that can annoy an entire beach [oh this pig actually moves at times] this is what luxury has become???
as why so many sold in the "diesel hating states" americans never hated diesels but we were duped by general motors into buying the crappiest P.O.S. ever devised. a oldsmobile engine [never a real performer let alone it's lack of longevity as a gas engine] converted to the high stresses of diesel with almost no internal changes these things would barely go 50k miles before destroying themselves. the entire high end market went to mercedes and to a lessor extent peugoet.
with vw pushing it's gutless wonder to the cheap seats.
volvo sold a few with that horrible audi motor but then abandond the market due to reliability concerns tarnishing their image.so once again america never hated diesels but we do hate manufactures of crappy diesels
note the only decent diesel g.m. made after the original oldsmobile debacle is the isuzu designed duramax, early ones of these had issues too.
also note ford diesels power ambulance fleets everywhere almost exclusivly [there is a reason for this]
dodge with the cummuns engine are strong performers
while trucks arnt luxury cars, they for now seem to have taken over the luxury market

How much does it cost for complete engine replacement?
b.queen
My car stopped today and would make a loud noise kind of like a diesel truck. I was told it could be the rods knocking. What's does this mean usually and how much does it cost?
Answer
It varies depending on model, year, and multiple other factors. However, at the very minimum, probably $2,000 for even the earliest fuel injected engines. Could possibly run as high as $10,000 if you drive a powerful luxury car.
I've seen a little 4 cylinder in a Nissan Frontier cost $7,500 total....
Pray it's not absolutely necessary. If it is, don't forget to scour the net for replacement, low mileage engines to drop in...www dot automotix dot com is a good place to start for replacement engines.
