I fail to see how people can make a contest out of who can push the accelerator of a car down the hardest. Clearly these sports are not a matter of who has the best vehicle, otherwise the richest contestant would always win. How can these car racing sports be classified as competitive sports?

Answer
Nascar isn't "a contest out of who can push the accelerator of a car down the hardest." First of all, you can' t make a car go extra fast by pressing harder and harder on the accelerator. Now that we have that cleared up, on to my long explanation of why Nascar is in fact, a sport.
First, let's look at what a sport is. A sport involves a mix of strategy and athleticism. Strategy is a huge part of Nascar. Calculating the fuel mileage of the cars. 2 tires vs. 4. Stay out under caution or pit. What adjustments to make on the car on the fly during the race. How to set up the car before the race. All of these strategies play a major role in each race and can win or lose a race or even a championship. Now on to athleticism. Are Nascar drivers athletes? The answer is absolutely. Think about how tiring a long car ride is. Nascar drivers have to be able to control their car at all times. One tiny slip up can end their day or ruin a chance at a win. So that means no tired arms, no leg cramps, and they have to have endurance. The temperature inside the cars regularly hits 130 degrees, and with several layers of fireproof clothes on, that makes focusing on driving all the more difficult. During this year's running of the Coca Cola 600, a thermometer inside Tony Stewart's car registered temperature of 140 before the heat caused it to fail. Greg Biffle's cool air blowers also failed during the race, and it was estimated that his cockpit reached temperatures of 160 degrees, and Biffle was leading during the final caution until he ran out of gas. Brad Keselowski also reported losing 12 pounds during the course of the race, and most drivers lose around 8 pounds through sweat during the course of a race. Now take a look at the pit crews. They can take a 3400 pound stock car, change all 4 58 pound tires, and fill the car with fuel from an 80 pound fuel can in under 20 seconds. In fact, one time in a truck race, a then-60 year old Morgan Shepherd served as his own pit crew when his under funded team couldn't afford one. Finally, all drivers and pit crew members follow rigid exercise programs and strict diets to stay in shape. In short, Nascar is a sport and the drivers and crew members are some of the finest athletes of any sport.

I want to race sport cars, how do I attain that goal?

I want to race in events like the KONI Challenge Series, I believe its called sport car racing, but Im not sure. Its the type of racing done with Sport cars, and is done on a non-oval track. First off, what is the name of this type of racing, second, how do I begin racing like this? I`m 15 and Im going to purchase my first car in a couple of months and start off drag racing.
Thanks.

Answer
It's generally called sports car racing, specifically the KONI Challenge is considered Endurance racing.

Drag racing probably isn't the best place to start, autocross might be better. Check out SCCA, NASA or other car clubs for autocross events.

When you want to start wheel to wheel road racing, you could start in karting, pro racing schools like skip barber or bertil roos, or SCCA club racing.

To make the next step up, I would suggest the VW TDI cup (http://www.vw.com/vwhype/motorsport/en/us/#/jetta_tdi_cup/).

From there, if you do well, you should have enough experience to jump right into KONI Challenge.

If you have decent funding this is actually pretty feasible. If not, you'll have to get lucky and find some sponsorship or win some shootouts or something to move up.
