Power is transferred to all wheels via a six-speed tiptronic automatic transmission. The V12 diesel engine can sprint the Q7 from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.5 sec and to an electronically capped top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). As for fuel consumption, the 12-cylinder Q7 requires 11.9 liters of diesel per 100 km or 19.8 mpg.

Making its worldwide premiere in Geneva, Lamborghini’s facelifted Gallardo features a series of styling and mechanical updates including a more powerful V10 engine. Design-wise, the all-wheel-drive coupe from Sant’Agata stands out thanks to the more aggressively styled front and rear-ends that give the Gallardo LP560-4 a menacing new look.

Looks however are only half the story on the 2009 Gallardo LP560-4 as Lamborghini upgraded the 5.2-liter V10 engine that now develops 560 Hp at 8,000 rpm. The increase of 40 Hp compared with that of the previous Gallardo, and the approximate 20 kg or 44 lbs reduction in weight, improves the power weight ratio to 2.5 kg per Hp and thus enhances performance. According to Lambo, the LP560-4 accelerates from 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.7 sec; its speed at 11.8 sec is 200 km/h (124 mph) while its top speed lies at 325 km/h or 202 mph. At the same time, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions have been reduced by 18 per cent.

Additionally, Lamborghini's engineers have also redesigned the four-wheel drive transmission and the suspension improving traction, handling and stability at high speeds.

Well even if you don’t, Audi will remind you as the German luxury carmaker will present a slightly modified version of its diesel-study called R8 TDI Le Mans in Geneva today. Slightly modified translates to a Brilliant Red bodywork, and well, that’s about it. As with the Detroit Show concept, the R8 TDI Le Mans is powered by a twin-turbocharged V12 diesel engine that generates 500 Hp and a maximum torque figure of 1,000 Nm (737.56 lb-ft). It sprints from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.2 seconds and its top speed is over 300 km/h or 186 mph.

He also said that while the new Megane is “a strong design statement”, it will not polarize opinions in the same way as the current model. “Those that didn't like the current model at first never did grow to like it,” said Le Quement. “The new model won't have the upright line at the rear – it will be more acceptable - but it will shake its arse for sure!”

The French carmaker will also shorten the timespan of the model renewal program. “The entire Megane range will be renewed by the end of 2009,” said Le Quement. This includes saloon, coupe-cabrio and estate bodystyles, plus “at least one more model”.

Aston Martin Lagonda Concept

At a time when the Big Three could be considering Chapter 11 and iconic brands are teetering on the verge of extinction, a brand founded by an American has been revived.

Lagonda was established by Wilbur Gunn, a native of Troy, Ohio who went to England to set up a European branch of his brother-in-law's Lagonda steam engine equipment manufacturing company.

Incidentally, "Lagonda" is the name of a district that grew up on the banks of Lagonda Creek, itself a corruption of the local Indian name for the river. To cut a long story short, Lagonda became part of Aston Martin in 1947 when it was bought by David Brown (the DB in Aston nomenclature).

Lagonda has now been revived by Aston Martin as being "above Range Rover" and described as a "useable" Roll-Royce, with four seats and all-wheel drive. Although the Lagonda Concept is powered by Aston's V-12, expect diesels, hybrids and "technologies not available to Aston Martin" to feature in the upcoming Lagonda models, which won't appear until 2012 "at the earliest."

The 2008 Lamborghini Gallardo features the Lamborghini Ad Personam personalization program that allows owners to individualize their Lamborghini at the factory. The limited-edition Lamborghini Reventon debuted at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show finished in Marrone Apus matte brown paint, the first Lamborghini offered with a matte finish. Marrone Apus is now available on the LP640 through Ad Personam a matte finish between black and brown with pigment in the paint to create an iridescent look that gives off gold reflections in sunlight. The Ferrari F430 is Ferrari’s latest mid-engine V8-powered sports car, available as both a coupe and an open-top Spider, replacing the 360 Modena. The Ferrari 308 GTB was the first mid-engine V8 Ferrari and is one of the most popular Ferraris of all time. The 308 was followed by the 348 for 1990 and the F355 for 1995 before being replaced by the 360 Modena for 2000. The 360 Spider was added during the 2001 model year. The F430 continues the extensive use of aluminum for the chassis, body and suspension, which began with the 360 Modena. An optional braking system with carbon-ceramic discs will be available. The overall design of the F430 is very aerodynamic and includes elements used in racing, such as a flat underbody and a large diffuser that dominates the rear view of the car. The diffuser creates downforce and eliminates the need for a large rear wing, although the body does include a small lip at the center of the short rear deck. The design is much more aggressive than the 360 Modena, with sharper, chiseled lines and a less organic shape.

The new Ferrari California will be available exclusively as a hardtop convertible, and feature a front-mounted 4.3-liter V8 engine churning out 460 horsepower. The V8 will send power to the rear wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, and this combo is expected to push the newest Ferrari to 60 mph in less than 4 seconds. It blends excellent everyday practicality and Camry reliability in a vehicle that's roomy but not so large as to be ponderous around town or be a big-time fuel guzzler. Problem is, it's boring. A smart purchase, for sure, but not one you'll brag about to your pals at work. Indeed, it's the Camry of crossovers.

Enter the new Toyota Venza. Yes, it's based on the Highlander's platform, but somehow this new Kentucky-built Venza exudes much more personality, which we chalk up to the elegantly aggressive styling penned at Toyota's CALTY Design Research Center in Newport Beach, California. The Venza is a fastback 5-door that defies categorization; it's not an SUV, it's not a coupe, it's not a sedan. Perhaps it's best described as a tall 5-seat wagon with the step-in height of a car and the elevated seating position of an SUV, all blended into an attractively styled package. And we all know that in today's world of increasingly competent vehicles, styling plays a more significant role than ever.

Available in front- or all-wheel-drive configurations, the new Venza is powered by a 183-bhp 2.7-liter 4-cylinder engine or a 3.5-liter V-6 with 268 bhp. We had a chance to drive both, and came away impressed. The all-new dohc 4-cylinder, which will soon find a home in other Toyotas, is remarkably smooth for its large displacement, thanks in part to some large engine mounts clearly designed to quell some of the inherent shake. This aluminum-block engine, which has dual balance shafts, gets the job done reasonably well, mated exclusively to a 6-speed automatic transmission. EPA fuel economy with the 4-cylinder is 21 mpg city/29 mpg highway.

The V-6, which mounts to the same seamless-shifting 6-speed automatic, is a model of smoothness, generating its 268 bhp at 6200 rpm and 246 lb-ft. of torque at 4700 rpm. Even with a full load of five folks in the V-6 Venza (three adults fit pretty well across the wide, split-folding rear bench), power is more than sufficient. On the other hand, EPA fuel economy with the V-6 isn't quite as good as with the four — 19 mpg city/26 mpg highway. The V-6 Venza is differentiated by dual exhausts and 20-in. wheels shod with 245/50 tires; they look just right in this application, whereas the 19s on the 4-cylinder models almost look too small.

Kia displayed three SOUL Concepts dubbed, Diva, Burner and Searcher at its Geneva Motor Show booth today. The trio of concept cars are closely related to the SOUL production car which will make its world premiere at the Paris Motor Show in October this year. All three concepts were created by Kia's European design team under the guidance of Kia's Chief Design Officer, Peter Schreyer.

The front bumper is equipped with L-shaped day-light LED driving lamps around the outer edges. At the rear, two vertical exhaust pipes are placed at the extremes of the bumper. Inside SOUL Burner, the four individual sports seats and entire cabin trim are divided horizontally. Above the split, everything is finished in a rich matt red, but below all is deep black.

The Kia SOUL Searcher is the concept that provides a haven of tranquility within the urban jungle, a comfort-zone on four wheels. It sets out to capture the spirit of Korean and Far Eastern culture with a focus on achieving personal inner peace and creating a calm cocoon for the occupants. Exuding casual confidence, the colors are muted, the textures are soft and the road presence is discreet.

On the outside, an old but lived-in leather finish is applied to the bonnet, the powered folding roof and tailgate panel, plus the dashboard, door panels and steering wheel rim. Inside, grey-beige felt is used to cover the floor and the seats for an "ambience of comforting domesticity that banishes pandemonium".

2009 Skoda Superb GreenLine

Standard versions of the new Superb, Skoda also took the wraps off the Superb GreenLine at the Geneva Show. The name GreenLine adorns Skoda models with optimised efficiency that exhibit reduced consumption. Renault Megane Coupe: Production Version to be Launched this Year!

While we all knew that Renault’s Geneva Show star, the Megane Coupe Concept would form the base for a production version, what we didn’t know, is when we’d see it in the market. That will happen much sooner that we thought as, according to Renault’s design director Patrick Le Quement, the production version of the Concept will be launched before the end of the year along with a more conventional five-door model.The new Megane, which will be revealed in September at the Paris Motor Show, won’t have a traditional 3door hatchback version – instead the range will feature a VW Scirooco-like coupe based on the concept unveiled in Geneva.

“You have the design before your very eyes,” said Renault design director Patrick Le Quement. He also said that while the new Megane is “a strong design statement”, it will not polarize opinions in the same way as the current model. “Those that didn't like the current model at first never did grow to like it,” said Le Quement. “The new model won't have the upright line at the rear – it will be more acceptable - but it will shake its arse for sure!”

The French carmaker will also shorten the timespan of the model renewal program. “The entire Megane range will be renewed by the end of 2009,” said Le Quement. This includes saloon, coupe-cabrio and estate bodystyles, plus “at least one more model”.

Project Fireblade by Idries Noah

Idries penned the vehicle to accommodate a 6.1-liter Supercharged V8 engine (apparently from the Corvette ZR1) that powers the rear wheels. Making its worldwide debut in Geneva, the Jaguar XKR-S is ultimately an upgraded special edition version of the standard XKR Coupe that will be produced in a mere 200 units, all of which will be available only in Europe. The 2010 Mazda 3

The 2010 Mazda 3 is no stranger to the automotive press with dozens of spy shots popping up over the past few months and speculative renderings coming from all around the world. Because the Mazda 3 is Mazda's top selling vehicle in the U.S. it's not hard to see why it is drawing in so much excitement surrounding its unveiling at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November.

The redesign couldn't come up at a better time for Mazda when, even in the midst of a languishing economy, the Mazda 3 continues to be a hot seller among the ultra competitive compact car segment against the likes of the newly revised Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla.

Although nothing is set in stone (read: confirmed by Mazda) yet we have created a list of what to expect when the Mazda 3 is officially unveiled by Mazda:

First, the current 2.3 liter motor will be swapped out in favor of Mazda's 2.5 liter currently in the 2009 Mazda6. This will bring power up to around 170 hp, from the current 150-156 hp of the Mazda 3 s-line and will offer both a six speed manual transmission and a five speed sport automatic transmission. The Mazda 3 i-line is expected to carryover its 2.0 liter engine and transmission options.

Photos of the 2010 Mazda 3 prototype have showcased a new dual exhaust and large, more aggressively styled wheels. Its not yet known if the dual exhaust will remain exclusive to the s-line or if the base model i-line Mazda 3s will also receive the new exhaust setup

When it comes to design the 2010 Mazda 3 can best be described as evolutionary with a similar overall body profile and a few changes around the front and back. From the spy shots we can see styling cues borrowed from the new Mazda6 and up front, with flared wheel arches and an upwardly sculpted front bumper reminiscent of the recent Mazdaspeed RX-8 concept car.

One styling point that's hotly debated is whether Mazda will add pronounced, sweeping body lines along the side of the next Mazda 3 to evoke styling elements from Mazda's popular Nagare concept car. While Mazda may sample some Nagare concept styling we don't think the lines will be quite as aggressive.

Following the Mazda6's march towards luxury car dominance, the upcoming Mazda 3 has been spotted with previously unseen luxury amenities in the compact car segment like integrated mirror turn signals, Mazda's advanced keyless entry system with push button start, mp3 hard drive, and numerous steering wheel based controls.
These new features are in addition to the current Mazda 3's options including HID headlights, auto rain sensing wipers, auto on/off headlights, Bose sound system with aux input, lighted vanities, auto down driver's window, one-touch moonroof and power seat controls.

None of the new features listed above are set in stone (they were observed on what appeared to be a near final prototype model during testing) it is very likely that the features will remain and be available on the final retail product. The stage is set and Mazda will officially reveal the 2010 Mazda 3's design at the Los Angeles Auto Show which runs between November 17th and 26th.

Our long term vehicle is a mid-year model Mazda 3 with mid-year added features like piano black trim, mp3 compatible cd changer, power driver's seat, lighted vanity mirrors and white gauge needles. It also has a new color for the Mazda3: Metropolitan Gray Mica. Mazda added a second new color for the mid year model with a beautiful white pearl option but we are MGM people.

There are other subtle differences but outside of the above mentioned items the 2008.5 Mazda 3 is pretty similar to the 2008 Mazda3.

About the Driver

I'm coming from a 2005 Infiniti G35x loaded with every possible option so while I adjusted my expectations for the lower price point ($22K with s-plan) I was not prepared for the way the Mazda3 would blow me away.

I drive my cars assertively (sometimes assertively aggressive if there is such a thing) and will really put this car through the motions during ownership. Driving a car is an experience each time and I rely heavily on important driving/comfort aspects like handling, acceleration, ride, cabin noise, long term driving comfort and in car technology which will all shape upcoming updates.

Note: You might notice a pretty heavy comparison in my first impressions of the G35 to the Mazda 3 and that's mostly due in part to the fact that I almost purchased the Mazda3 in 2005 but was offered a very good lease deal on a 2005 G35x loaded for nearly the same that I would pay to own the Mazda3.
Seemed like a good idea at the time. Biggest regret of my life.
Now that you know me, let's talk about why you're here: first impressions! First Impressions
There are a ton of really impressive features in this car! I struggled for a long time with not being technologically current in my 2005 Infiniti and the Mazda 3 is like an answer to my prayers. Here are some of my favorite features:

1) Remote Start - I can't believe how wicked cool remote start really is. Manufacturers are finally starting to offer remote start as an accessory that is installed at the port and I recommend it 200%. It's perfect for every possible hot/cold day when you don't feel like running out in the weather to start the car so it can warm up only to run back into the house and finish getting ready.
Remote start is something I could see myself not living without ever again and it wasn't an option on the Infiniti so +1 to Mazda for offering it. For the 2008.5 mid-year refresh, Mazda has integrated the remote start into the regular key fobs so now you won't have two sets of control keys to use on one set.

2) Rain Sensing Wipers - If you've never seen it, you wouldn't believe it. While driving home I didn't think the rain sensing wipers were working properly because the stalk appeared to be in the right position and it was raining pretty hard. I fiddled with the stalk for a little bit and discovered that it was in its "Off" position rather than "Auto". Once rotating the end piece into the right position it works quite well but I don't think putting "Off" and "Auto" within a knob's turn away was the best idea in the world.

3) The Manual Leveling HIDs - I don't know if it's manual really. It's kind of manual and automatic. You move the switch up or down until you reach the number you want (0 - 3) and the car adjusts the headlights to match that setting. The leveling headlights are not gimmicky at all and were pretty helpful while driving through fog and raising the headlights to watch for deer/pedestrians on the side of the road. Another brilliant feature the G35x was missing.

4) Aux Input - This is the golden feature for me! For the longest time (since 2005) I have always wanted a way to play my iPod in my car. I can't even begin to count the number of trips and meetings I've been late to while waiting for a cd to burn so I didn't have to listen to the same old crap in my car while driving there.
In fact, I wanted the aux input so bad that I refused the Mazda CX-7 when considering my next car purchase purely based on its lack of an aux input and it was worth it ten times over. I love being able to plug my iPhone into the stereo and just scroll through the playlists to find a list I'm feeling right now. It works seamlessly and I really couldn't be more ecstatic over this feature.

5) The Ride - Most people are going to give me a confused look but I'm telling you the 2008.5 Mazda3s GT has a nicer ride than my 2005 Infiniti G35x. Not only does it ride better but it's much quieter and it doesn't make the "Mothership" car sick when I drive with her in the car. Thumbs up all around!

So those are my top five favorite things about the car. Overall it's really just an experience that new car buyers have to try to believe because it's extremely uncommon at this price point. I'm finally excited to drive to different places just to be in the car and I love everything about it! If you don't own one, buy one. If you own one, buy a 2008.5 model! The new trim, power driver's seat, gauges and everything in between are worth it.

Over the years there have been a lot of different styles of the camaro, but none are a appealing as the first generation, and of the first generation the 1969 model year is my favorite, so many things were done the that particular year of camaro.
It was the height of the muscle car wars of the 1960's, we had all kinds of dealers competing to build the best, and fastest camaro ever, I could list them all day long, but we'll stick to the ones that people know, like Yenko Chevrolet, Baldwin Chevrolet, Berger Chevrolet, and Fred Gibb Chevrolet; these dealers far and away did the most for the camaro.

First we'll begin with Fred Gibb, this Chevrolet dealer had the great idea to push the ZL1 camaro, and hired Dick Harrell to drive it, who did a spectacular job, first let's talk a little about the car, the ZL1 camaro was truly an engineering feat for the 1960's, it came from the factory with an all aluminum 427 cid engine that pushed close to 721 HP.

The car in total didn't weigh any more then a small block car, but boasted the power and torque of a big block, which obviously helped this car to do amazing things, it's designation from the factory was "COPO" 9560, the car was actually rated at 430 HP from the factory, a huge underrating, Dick Herrell drove the car to an amazing 10.05 in the 1/4 mile.

This 1/4 mile time was of course with the headers uncorked, and a set of racing slicks on the cat, but in full street dress the car would pull 10.30 in the 1/4 mile, with a good driver, this camaro looked as plain Jane as a camaro can look, the only tell tale sign was the cowl induction hood.
Now for the Baldwin Motion camaro, for this feat two companies joined forces, Baldwin Chevrolet, and Motion Performance, and a miracle they performed, the Baldwin-Motion camaro started life as a regular camaro, and got transformed by two automotive geniuses.

Motion had put a guarantee on the car to run an 11.5 quarter mile all day long, and it did, now if I remember correctly the car was rated at 425 HP, this was untrue, the actual HP to push a 3650 pound car through the 1/4 mile in 11.5 seconds would have been about 483.3 rwh, and 604 HP at the flywheel..
They had a 12 bolt rear end, and usually came with a 4.10:1 gear set, although the 3.73:1 was available also, and a lot more street able of a gear set, but not as zippy in the 1/4 mile, a true motion phase III camaro will command about a $400,000 price tag today, but in the 1960's about $4,800.00.
This was not your normal camaro, you'd better be prepared to drive, and ready to give her the respect that she deserved, it was a fun ride for those who could handle it.

Now for a car that I'm sure you've all heard of, the sYc or "Super Yenko Camaro", this car was a very special camaro, Don Yenko of Yenko Chevroelt would order a sports car conversion off of the central office production order list, or a "COPO" car, in this case it was COPO 9737.

The 9737 sorts car conversion came with some goodies, suspension, and rally wheels, and then toped that off with the COPO 9561, which provided the L72 427 CID 425 HP engine, after Don got the cars at his dealership he would then add a graphics kit that included an arrow on the cowl hood, with two stripes moving back toward the passenger compartment of the car, he then added a big golf club stripe, that started at the front fender and went all the way to the back of the quarter panel on each side of the car, it ended with a little triangle on each end of the spoiler.
Don also added a gauge package, and a few other small things, and this created the Super Yenko Camaro, whan Don put Dickk Harrell behind the wheel of this car would would perform amazing feats at the race track, the Yenko Camaro was good for a 12.59 @ 108 MPH in the ¼ mile, on stock rubber, with the headers corked, I have been unable to locate the times that the car ran with the headers open, and a set of wrinkle walls on the car, but you can bet on around 12.30 @ 115 MPH, no slouch for a street car huh.

Most of these cars came with a Muncie M21 or M22 rock crusher transmission, and if you ever wondered how the rock crusher got it's name, supposedly they dropped diamonds in to the gear box, and before it chewed the gears, the rocks were crushed to powder.

Suzuki Cars Makeover

Suzuki has long been an automotive enigma. For a company that has been rolling out beautifully crafted superbikes for many years their curious offerings on the car market have bemused many a reviewer not to mention the car buying public.

Other brands such as Kia and Hyundai had upped the ante with their greatly improved cars and so it became apparent to Suzuki that they would have to do likewise or face the prospect of getting left behind in the automotive race.
It was only a few years ago that the old Suzuki Swift could be found on British roads, usually being driven at about 20mph on the motorway, they were only really popular with cash strapped pensioners who used them pretty much as motorised shopping trolleys.

Then we come to the Suzuki Vitara which became the ultimate accessory for the 90's hairdresser and was generally found in white, in fact I think you could only get them in white. Often seen with ridiculously over-sized wheels and a distinctly unfunny spare wheel cover on the back which depicted two animals mating, oh dear.
Things weren't much better with Suzuki's foray into light commercial vehicles with the Suzuki carry (also known as the Bedford or Vauxhall Rascal). What it could actually carry I'm unsure of, but it looked as if it would struggle with much more than the driver on board.

All this was to change dramatically however when in 2005 Suzuki hit the ground running with the launch of the all-new Swift. The Swift had a big press launch in the UK and appeared in TV commercials featuring none other than Cristiano Ronaldo which saw him demonstrating some of his ball skills to some adoring young fans before disappearing in his little Swift.

The Swift is essentially a poor man's Mini but still manages to deliver nippy performance especially the Sport version and is well built and of course costs a lot less than its counterparts. The Swift comes with a number of petrol engines plus a diesel engine sourced from Fiat which delivers good fuel economy.

The Suzuki Splash was developed with GM who also manufacture the car as the Vauxhall Agila. The Splash replaced the Wagon R which was an ill advised name for the British market but as with the Swift the Splash is another good example of a small city car which people are now turning to in their droves. I don't know if this is luck or a very shrewd move by Suzuki to capture this growing market.

Suzuki still offers a 4x4 range which consists of the Jimny which is a cheeky little off-road vehicle which has been around since the 1970's. The Jimny has been improved and restyled slightly but is still really an imitation Jeep. It comes with rigid front and rear axles and switchable four wheel drive as well as a dual ratio transfer gearbox.

Curiously the Jimny is only available with a petrol engine in the UK which does not offer amazing fuel economy. They are renowned for their reliability and despite its small size the Jimny performs respectably well off-road and is unrivalled in the small 4x4 market.

The Grand Vitara has been brought up to date and now looks like a far more sensible vehicle than the Vitara of old with the five door version being the most desirable. Finally we have the SX4 which is a small urban SUV with the option of four wheel drive should you need it around town. Another car closely developed with Fiat but although it is built in Europe the steady hand of Japanese build quality still remains firmly placed on its little shoulder.

So there you have it, Suzuki has brought itself to the fore as a supplier of small practical cars that are well placed to succeed in an ever- changing market.

Turned on the television today to be greeted with doom and gloom on the news about the state of the economy. It was the same yesterday, the day before and well seemingly for as long as I can remember. If things were as bad as the media made out we'd all be unemployed, homeless and dead within the week. Being a sometime journalist myself I shouldn't criticise the media, with me being one of the bad guys but in a refreshingly honest manner I will. If there is a whiff that you, your perfect wife, two healthy children, family Jeep and home are after a holiday or a new home, all hell breaks loose.

It seems that by keeping us downtrodden we won't treat ourselves to the goods and services that we deserve following a typical 37 hour weekly slog at the office. Certainly don't listen to the politicians and what they spout, but equally don't be downtrodden either, if you've been saving for a week in the sun, do it, regardless of whether the big bang machine will suck your plane into Mars.

The thing I scratch my head over the most though is the cost of goods relative to others - there appears to be no logical relativity at all. For example, a highly sophisticated DVD player with years of research, thousands of wires, micro boards and the ability to keep you entertained for an indefinite amount of time costs from £30 for a decent model. Compare this to a barbecue which consists of three metal legs, a tray and technology that has existed for millions of years and makes you the man of the house for 30 minutes, which costs £85.
It's all well and good scrimping and saving on food, gas and electricity, but when the most basic way of burning your sausages costs nearly three times as much as something a hundred times more sophisticated, it's time to start believing the world has gone mad. The world of cars does appear to buck this trend and in turn temporarily stabilised my sanity. For years the pattern has been simple, pay less, get less. A cheaper manufacturer is more likely to break down, prove to be false economy and be rubbish to drive anyway. Therefore stick to a reputable brand, pay a bit for more for your CD player and alloy wheels and be content knowing the cheaper competitors that have all this included in the on-the-road price are far worse.

Imagine my state of mind then when I discovered this has all been tipped upside down too. Not by the media, but by Jeep. You see in the world of the SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle) or 4 x 4 as they were previously known Jeep is the cheapest option but weirdly could prove to be the best. The new Jeep Cherokee is the latest model and has the wealth of 65 years experience in its veins. There are two things that instantly spring to mind upon seeing the latest model - Jeep appear to be following Porsche's lead with their 911 and not restyling it at all and therefore it looks like a mini Land Rover and just like the old model.

The good news is that the styling was previously very likable whilst being utilitarian, the cornerstone of any good Jeep. Therefore you get chunky features, the patented seven slot front grill and that mud-splattered heritage. Jeep also won't bombard you with options - you can either have a 2.8 litre diesel with a manual or automatic gearbox. Yes that's it.

I'd hazard a well-judged guess that a Jeep owner will do more off road driving than the typical SUV owner and the fact is that the Cherokee can cope ably with rugged terrain, thanks to its high ground clearance, powerful engine and hill descent option as standard. That doesn't mean it has sacrificed tarmac handling mind. Yes it isn't as refined as a car, or SUVs in a much higher price bracket from the continent, but the Jeep combines on and off road duties perfectly well.

Inside the Cherokee is well equipped with the aforementioned hill descent accompanied with air conditioning, parking sensors, stability and cruise control and seats that are both electrically moved about and heated. For an extra £950 you can open your roof to the sky above with the 'Sky Slider' option - a panoramic canvas roof. Some may complain that the materials used on the interior aren't to the highest standard but they all function perfectly well and keep a good chunk of money off the retail price.

That price starts at £25, 595 which in any economic climate is good sense. The Jeep Cherokee is therefore cheap but not rubbish. If that doesn't mess up your life equilibrium, nothing will.

The models of the Porsche 356 that were available were initially the coupe, the cabriolet (which is a luxury convertible) and then the roadster which is a stripped down version of the convertible. Before this model was withdrawn in 1965 it went through several alterations and improvements. The most desirable and memorable of these was the 356 Carrera, which often sold for well over $150 000, the Super 90 and the famous Speedster. In the late 50's the usual selling price for a Porsche was already $4000.

In 1954, Max Hoffman was the only importer of the Porsche car into the United States. He soon realized that he needed a more cost effective, racier version of the popular German car for the American market. This is how the creation of the 356 Speedster came about! The Speedster became an instant hit with its compact little body, removable windshield for racing, bucket seats and minimal folding top. Even in the modern day and age, the Speedster is still valued and loved. It is sold for over $100 000 and has even been used in several famous films. It is admired and treasured as a collector's item.

The production of the Speedster peaked at 1, 171 cars, and that was all the way back in 1957. In 1959 the Speedster was replaced by a more sensible version - the convertible D model. The D model featured a taller windshield, glass side windows, and more comfy seats.

Although they had released their new model, the 911, the company continued to sell the 356C through to the end of 1965 in North America. Unfortunately, the customers complained that the price of the 911 was too high. It was almost twice the price of the 356! Porsche counter-acted these complaints by producing the 912, which used the same engine as the 356. The 912 model was produced and sold between 1965 and 1969.

Technically the design for the 7-Series has not been changed much since 2002 and for that we are happy. It has a simple design that is easy to fall in love and shows off a look of sophistication.

This 5-seater is still considered to be one of the most technologically advanced sedans in its class. Even though it is one of the larger sedans it drives smoothly like a smaller car. The excellent handling of the car comes from the tuned suspension and steering. This helps to keep the car steady around sharp corners. Each model is equipped with Active Roll Stabilization that works to stiffen the antiroll bars of the suspension and to reduce body roll. In addition to this the 750i and 705Li models come with the Sport Package - that offers firmer suspension tuning - or the Adaptive Ride Package - which comes with self-leveling air springs and adaptive shock damping.

The latter package comes standard on the 760Li. All of the Li models are equipped with 5" longer wheelbase and are 5.5" longer then the standard 750i. The period starting around 1995 and ending in early 2008 will very likely be remembered for the new American summer vacation cliché. Big enough to seat the entire family in a distinct measure of comfort, strong enough to denote safety, and aggressive enough in appearance to make a definitive statement about the driver, there was certainly a lot to love about the SUV. Of course, that was before the age of triple digit oil barrel prices. Now, the beast that the Sport Utility Vehicle appeared to have officially killed way back in 1996, the station wagon, is making a comeback.

The lineage of the station wagon can be traced all the way back to a variant of the Ford Model T, but according to some station wagon aficionados, the first true station wagon was the 1923 Star made by Durant Motors Company. The station wagon truly bloomed into the car of choice for large families, as one might expect, with the baby boom following World War II. The move of families away from urban areas and into the suburbs paired with the spread of the highway system and the increase in average family size made the station wagon practical. And despite the wagon never occupying the same public love as the sports car or even the pickup truck, prior to the 1970s gas crisis, the station wagon accounted for nearly one out of every five cars on the road.

Like most cars today, the overall look is more aggressive, merging the handling of a car, roughly the appearance of a sport utility vehicle, and yes, the practicality of a station wagon. And the advances go beyond looks. The smaller crossovers and blatant modern station wagons like the Audi A4 Avant, Volvo V70, and the Subaru Forester, have marked increases in fuel economy when compared to the SUVs that they are quickly starting to replace.
Yes, it was the fuel crisis of the 1970s that led to decline of the station wagon, and the SUV that originally killed them. However, it was the gas crisis of 2008 that gave rebirth to the modern station wagon, or whatever the car manufacturers are calling them. The New Mazda RX8

Mazda Motor Corporation has made a noise when it first introduced the Mazda RX8, its latest version of the RX range, in 2001. The company succeeded in attracting the attention of sports car enthusiasts to the RX8 model. According to its press releases, the new version of the RX model is better, more powerful and comfortable than its predecessors.

Truly enough, Mazda RX8 came out with better performance and look. Although it still uses the standard Wankel rotary engine, the RX8 has been enhanced with a 16V Renesis engine. The earlier RX models use 13V rotary engines capable of displacing 1.3 liters of fuel that could yield 237 horsepower. But in the RX8 model, the 16V Renesis engine is capable of producing 238hp at 1.6 liters displacement.
Another distinguishing feature of the Mazda RX8 is its balanced weight from front to rear. The car's weight is almost evenly distributed with almost an even 50:50 distribution on the front and mid-portion. This near perfect balance was attained due to the placing of the engine behind the front axle and the fuel tank in the middle, right before the rear axle.

The RX8's appearance is also quite unique. Its doors are almost similar to suicide doors, only that it does not have B-pillars between the front and rear doors. Due to this, the front overlap the rear door and that the rear doors can be opened only once the front doors are open. Apart from its distinct appearance, the RX8 is also spacious for four people. On the front seat, more room is given between the driver and the front passenger, while the two passengers at the back can be comfortably seated.

On the downside, the much-publicized Mazda RX8 seem to have not performed according to expectations. The initial announcement of a 247hp capability of the 6-speed manual transmission sports car raised some eyebrows. With its 1.6-liter engine, the 247hp power is rendered doubtful. And it turned out that a number of RX8 owners were dismayed that the car did not produce as much power and speed as was published. Later, Mazda North America Office revised the output from 247hp to 238hp.

The soon-to-be-released 2008-2009 Mazda RX8 will not have that much change except that the chassis bracings were increased to add more rigidity and some other cosmetic changes whoch will make the Mazda RX8 contract hire a popular choice. That is why we are excited and happy to welcome the 2008 Lamborghini Gallardo

The 2008 Gallardo is more traditional then the past models that they have released. It is built with the traditional doors and cockpit. It is available in three different types; the Spyder convertible, standard coupe, and the lightweight performance edition Superleggera.

The Superleggera has a more aggressive suspension tuning and weight reduction that is close to 150 pounds. This makes it much less livable then the other two designs. But on the positive side this model increases the performance and handling for the Gallardo. The Sypder has an added 250 pounds of weight made up of structural reinforcement.

The Sant'Agata factory has already started production on the successor for the coupe to improve upon the Gallardo LP560-4. They Spyder will not be changed and the Superleggera will be sold for this one year only. When it comes to the coupe we think it might be best to wait till 2009 and focus on getting your hands on the Leggera model.

Currently, the 2008 Porsche Boxster has a 245hp V6 engine, while the 2008 Boxster S model has a 295hp V6 engine. Porsche hinted that it will release either next year or in 2010 a newer version of the Boxster models with more powerful engines.

The most distinguishing features of the latest versions of the Boxster are the enhanced engines that became even more powerful. The S version, for example, can do a performance of 60 miles per hour in less than 6 seconds. That means the car's engine releases a lot of power. This performance was made possible due to the addition of a Motronic ME 7.8 engine technology that optimizes the Boxsters' engines.

When it comes to appearance, it is evident that the Boxster's appearance is copied from the Porsche 550 Spyder and the Porsche Spyder and Speedster models, except the convertible top instead of a hardtop roof. The Suzuki Swift

They say imitation is the most sincere form of flattery. I guess there are plenty of examples of impersonators to back up this age old quote in modern society. The Beatles have been mercilessly plagiarised by scores of bands - most notably Oasis, McDonalds are constantly faced with hundreds of new fast food outlets each year and in the car world, the new Suzuki Swift is a cheeky take on the Mini. In fact Japan imitates the styling of European cars, blends it with their ingenious engineering and can produce such monumental cars as the Honda NSX, Nissan Skyline or new GTR.

The thing is though that in my experience, imitation isn't the most sincere form of flattery, it's just really annoying. My old neighbour and part-time friend was a prime example. If I bought myself a piece of cutting-edge fashion (that invariably looked awful) we'd look like twins as he'd buy the same clothing the next week. Having saved up my hard-earned cash from a god-awful summer job I treated myself to an all singing all dancing guitar amplifier. I knew what I was getting was the best having lost a day of my life to researching all about it on the internet. Imagine my joy when on the day it arrived, the delivery guy said "I've just dropped the same thing off next door too, odd co-incidence".

Imagine how BMW felt then when the modern Mini took over the cheeky supermini market within days of its launch. Pretty smug and wealthy is how I picture it. It wasn't a big surprise really, when you consider firstly the massive following the original had garnered and that the small hatchback market was as interesting and appealing as sticking your head in the oven. The funky design was modern and striking but retained the key features of the original, such as the round headlights, square roof, and racing stripes. Combined with BMW's build quality, a smidgen more practicality and competitive pricing the old fans flocked to the showrooms and were joined by everyone from trendy bachelors, business women, mums and everyone in between. In short, for the second time in history, Mini turned the small hatchback market on its head.

Popularity as we know breeds imitators. Unfortunately for BMW and their Mini, the latest Suzuki Swift offers nearly all the pros of the Mini, very few cons and a sack-load of money left over if you buy one. If I got angered at my neighbour, I can only imagine how the suits at BMW reacted to Suzuki's unveiling of this.

The Suzuki is styled with cute headlights at the front, square roof and racing stripes - sound familiar? Despite its funky exterior, the Swift drives in a very mature manner with the car living up to its name thanks to petrol or diesel engine options that are very responsive. Driving around town, the Suzuki can nip into parking spaces larger hatchbacks only dream of. It's light to manoeuvre and puts a smile on your face. On the open road things get better still. Minimal body roll, a quiet cabin even when hurtling along the motorway and responsive steering leave you praying for more bends in the road.

The interior is finished to a high standard and belies the fact you're in a supermini rather than a larger saloon. There's plenty of headroom thanks to a high roof and the seats provide plenty of back support, although lack of adjustment options on the steering wheel reach do leave you sitting as upright as if you're a meercat. Rear boot space is limited compared to larger rivals but is still usable.

And now for the best bit: the Suzuki Swift starts at £8,299 a full £3,000 less than the entry level Mini. Make no mistake, for this price you're not getting a Mini wannabe, but a bona fide supermini that'll put a smile on your face whatever the weather and wherever you're driving.

The BMW E46 3 Series

For a kickoff, let's be honest to say that BMWs are indeed great cars. Solidly built with top-notch German engineering and precision, it is one of those cars that will give you years of faithful service - provided you take good care of it. And one of the most successful models that BMW has ever produced was the 3-Series E46. Launched in 1998, it became one of BMW's most successful 3-Series models until today - with a record sale of more than 500,000 units sold worldwide in 2002 alone.

The E46 isn't a car that is too difficult to live it. Sure, it might have aged a bit, and being German, it's no doubt packed with fancy electronic gadgetries and features, thus making it a pain-in-the-neck-car when it comes to servicing and maintenance, or worse still, when a breakdown occurs. True? Well ... Not Really. At least not in the eyes of most people anyway.

In reality, there's still a lot going for the E46, actually. Though many of its design cues were taken from its predecessor, the E36, but BMW designers "modified and redefined" the lines of the car - making it look more aggressive but yet projecting an executive-like appearance to capture the attention of the not-so-young-at-heart generation.

There's pretty much something for everyone who wants a piece of this machine. If you're on a budget and having an E46 is something that you really must have, then get one with the lowest engine specification such as the 318i. It might not have a lot grunt and oomph to push you off like a rocket on the wide and open road, but at least you can still cruise around town, bring it to clubs, or park it in front of a 5-star hotel - and it'll still give you the pose factor.

The E46 also came in coupe, touring and compact variants - though it was the coupe version that was the best-seller compared to its other three siblings. The sedan version of course, was almost always at the top of the rung due to its desirability as a family sedan by most people.

The model underwent a facelift in 2002, and the outcome which resulted from it was - the car became even more popular. Changes include a set of re-designed headlights, new bumpers and a stiffer chassis. The 318i also received a new and more powerful engine, with a horsepower increase from 116hp to 141hp.

But to be honest, if you really want to feel the raw power and grunt of a Beemer, then the 6-potters are the only way to go. Model variants for the 6-cylinder E46s came in the form of the 320i, 323i, 325i, 328i and 330i. Of course, the trump card would be the ever popular and ever-menacing M3, which was fitted with a whopping 3.2L inline-6, capable of propelling the car from 0 - 100km/h in just 4.8 seconds.

In a nutshell, the E46still captures the hearts of many people until today. True, it might not be as technologically advanced as the revolutionary E90 but it still looks stunning whenever you see one on the road these days. It's got presence. It's got style. And it definitely has got personality. And that's what makes any BMW stand out from the crowd.

The Ford Capri

The Ford Capri, sporting a "muscle car" image due to its styling and marketing, has become a cult classic in the UK, with parts and accessories easily accessible, and a high number of owners clubs across the United Kingdom. Not only was the Ford Capri styled in an aggressive manner, the muscle car image was reinforced by a number of lucrative roles on the TV screen, staring in The Professionals, Brannigan and Minder. With the car performing stunts, full throttle speeds, and being portrayed as a fast, sporty and bravado car on millions of peoples television screens, the marketing line "The car you always promised yourself" all contributed to a high demand for the Capri.

Originally know as the "Colt" during the development stages, the car name had to be changed due to trademark infringements with Mitsibushi already holding the trademark, the car was named the "Capri". The name originates from an earlier Ford model, the Ford Consul Capri 335, an unsuccessful model previously released. The original mark I model was released in 1969 and was intended to live up to its American counterpart, the Mustang, which had seen a great run in the United States, hence the campaign to portray the Ford Capri as a bravado muscle car. The first range produced in the Dagenham Ford factory included 1300cc and 16l engine variations, sharing mechanical features of the Cortina therefore being an affordable sporty car for the masses. More powerful variations were also produced, with the Ford Capri 3000GT producing close to 140hp, and later the introduction of the RS2600 in the early seventies.

A year after the release of the RS2600 saw the production of the new Mark I Capri, sporting some changes such as a new engine, headlamps and greater comfort. A year later also saw the introduction of the RS3100, a larger capacity version of the already powerful RS2600, with only 100 produced. After a successful run of the Mark I, selling 1,200,000, the Mark II was introduced to the marketplace. The Mark II was a more practical car in comparison, with the 1973 oil problem having a direct affect on the motor industry. A less lengthy bonnet, and the hatchback design made the Mark II Capri more practical for the average motorist. The classic bravado image of the Capri was still very much alive with the introduction of the John Player special. The 3 litre S and Ghia replaced the 3 litre GT in the mid seventies, due to lowering sales. Whilst the Mark III Capri offered no different engine variations from the Mark II, the Mark III did sport the new classic headlamps from the RS2000, plus other changes.

New racing parts and accessories were made available for the Capri in the UK, and 1981 saw the introduction of the Capri 2.8 litre injection, replacing the 2 and 3 litre variations of the Capri. These introductions also saw Ford focusing mainly on the UK market due to rapid declining sales across the world for the Ford Capri. The reducing sales saw the Capri only sold in the UK at the end of the production of the Fiord Capri, with the UK still demanding the cult classic. The Ford Capri had sold close to 2,000,000 models worldwide when production finally ceased.

The Ford Thunderbird

The Ford Thunderbird has been hailed as an American icon, preserved in film and song. The Beach Boys, the popular rock group of the 60's, put the Thunderbird to music in their song, "Fun, Fun, Fun"

"And she'll have fun, fun, fun til her daddy takes the t-bird away"
One of the Beach Boys, Dennis Wilson, originally owned a 1955 T-bird. It is now in the Hollywood Stars Cars Museum in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, fully restored with the Beach Boys' autograph on the hood.

The T-bird is also remembered for her film debut in American Graffiti.

The T-bird was originally conceived to compete with the Chevrolet Corvette. The years following World War 2 witnessed the return of many veterans from the European front. While in Europe they had seen and fallen in love with the European sports cars. American manufactures took note of this and Chevrolet marketed the

Corvette. So Ford was challenged to produce a competitor.

Three men were most instrumental in the creation of the original T-bird. Lewis D. Crusoe was a retired GM executive however Henry Ford II had enticed him to join Ford. George Walker was Ford's chief stylist and a vice-president. Frank Hershey was a Ford designer.

Crusoe and Walker were visiting in Paris when Crusoe saw a sports car in the Grand Palais. They were impressed by the design and Walker then called Frank Hershey in Dearborn. Hershey started working on the design. It was to be an open car that would seat two passengers. It would be equipped with An Interceptor V8 engine and be capable of attaining a speed of over 100 miles per hour.

Although designed to compete with the Corvette, it wasn't a true sports car. Ford conceived it as a personal luxury car.

For some reason, they encountered difficulty in creating a name for the car so Crusoe offered a prize, a $250 suit, to anyone who submitted an acceptable name. A stylist, Alden Giberson, entered a list with Thunderbird included.

The idea behind the name is controversial. Some sources say it was named for the Native American god of rain and prosperity. Palm Life Magazine stated the name came from an ultra exclusive housing district. It is also reported that Giberson got the idea when he witnessed an illusion of a bird struck by lightening during a storm.
The Thunderbird first met the American public at the Detroit Auto Show in February of 1954. However, it was not available at dealers until October of 1954. This model was a two-door convertible equipped with a V8 engine that could cruise between 110 and 120 miles per hour. The standard top was fiberglass but a fabric convertible top was an option. Featuring four way powered seats and push button interior doors, the T-bird was actually a small personal luxury car not a sports car.

However, it definitely appealed to the American public at the time and in the first ten days of sale, dealers received 3,500 orders. The total sales for 1955 amounted to 16,155 as Ford realized their goal of surpassing the Corvette.

Later however, owners of the 'Classic' would complain about the lack of a back seat and small trunk. This would lead to modifications and a new generation of T-birds however, the "Little Bird" remains an American icon.

Porsche 911

Often said to be firstly named the Porsche 901, the name was later scrapped due to Peugeot having copyright over car model names which contain three numbers, with a zero in the middle. The Porsche had a name change to 911 before release in 1964. Replacing the Porsche 356, the beginnings of this long running classic proved to owe itself to the great styling of the car, and great performances in a number of races on a spectrum of driving surfaces. Finishing first in the Monte Carlo Rally and Targa Florio, the rear wheel drive Porsche 911 proved popular and many variations were produced which were of greater capacity and power. The comfortable and easy to drive sports car proved popular mainly due to the styling, but with a backed up pedigree on the track.

The 1991cc 6 cylinder 911 shared components with the lesser 912 model. The Porsche 911 had further variations of the 911 produced, namely the Targa top 911, an automatic 911 variation, an entry level 911, the more powerful 911S and the 911T which replaced the previous Porsche 912 model. The engine capacity was later increased to 2200cc across the 911 range, with the introduction of the C and D series in 1970.

Two years after the C and D series saw the introduction of the E and F series, with further power increases from the released C and D series. The 2.2 litre engine was increased to 2.4 litre, with the only other change made to the transmission. Porsche was very aware of the success the previous series had received, and therefore were cautious not to upset the trade. The next 911 version released saw a massive amount of praise from the press and enthusiasts, the Porsche 911 Carrera RS was equipped with a 2.8 litre engine and is often labelled the best classic 911. The Carrera received an even greater power increase, and had great success in finish second place in the 1974 Le Mans race. The G,H, I and J series were later released, with further engine increases, making the 911 having a minimum engine capacity of 2.7 litre.

1974 saw the launch of the Porsche 911 Turbo, a move which helped Porsche re-establish sales of the 911 which had taken a slight downward turn. The 3 and 2.3 litre engine of the Porsche 911 Turbo was an increase from previous variations of the 911, with another addition of the rear whale tail spoiler, and revised body kit.
The Porsche 911 was in danger during the early 80s of being replaced with the Porsche 928, but successful continual sales saw the plan abandoned. The 911 cabriolet was also released in the early 80s, with great praise and often said to be more aesthetically pleasing compared to the Targa top. With successful sales throughout the 80s, the Porsche 964 type 911 was released in the late 80s with some notable forwards steps with power steering and anti braking system as standard. The 911 Turbo was also revamped in 1989 with another increase in capacity to a 3.6 litre engine.

The type 993 was introduced in 1993 with only a slight variation to the styling in comparison to the previous 911 variations. The 911 Turbo was upgraded and was now twin turbo charged with four wheel drive. The new 996 got a very negative response from the motor world, with the styling of the car undergoing massive changes, much to the disappointment of the 911 lovers. The classic bug eye headlamps were scraped, with major changes to the anterior of the car. The negative response was obviously heard loudly by Porsche, and this saw the releases of more powerful variations of the 911 series shortly after. The renewed powerful cars included the 911 996 Turbo, 911 Turbo S, Carrera 4S. Porsche finally brought back some of the move loved features of the old 911 such as the bug eyes headlamps, whilst maintaining a modernised look, with the new Porsche 997 type 911.

Dale Earnhardt Inc. is expected to announce today that Aric Almirola will drive the No. 8 Chevrolet full-time next season, opening the door for Mark Martin to move to the #5 Chevrolet at Hendrick Motorsports

Team officials decided to promote Almirola to full-time competition because he has developed a good rapport with crewchief Tony Gibson, and because the 24-year old is a better demographic fit for the team’s U.S. Army sponsorship. Sirius Speedway reported two weeks ago that the Army is considering its options for 2009, and could leave DEI for another team. Elevating Almirola to full-time status could bolster DEI’s hopes of retaining the Army sponsorship for another year.

Initially, Almirola’s promotion was believed to be a result of Mark Martin’s decision to move to Hendrick next season. However, it now appears that the opposite was true. DEI reportedly told Martin during All-Star week at Lowe’s Motor Speedway that they had decided to run Almirola full-time in 2009, leaving the Arkansas veteran without a ride. Martin immediately began searching for another opening, and found one at Hendrick Motorsports. He has been unavailable for comment, but is expected to announce his new ride later this week at Daytona International Speedway.

Newman/Penske Confirm Split; Stewart-Haas Announcement Could Come At Indy

The dominoes continue to fall in place for next season, after Penske Racing and Ryan Newman announced today that they have agreed to go their separate ways in 2009.
Team owner Roger Penske made the announcement today, saying, “We want to thank Ryan for his hard work and contributions to Penske Racing over the past nine years. We wish Ryan all the best for the future, and we’ll continue to focus our efforts on making the Chase…this season.”

He added that a new driver for the No. 12 Dodge will be announced in the near future. Newman said, “I appreciate Penske Racing and all they have done for me, but more importantly, I appreciate their friendship and what they have done for my career.”

The Indiana native said Saturday that he has three options to consider -- other than remaining at Penske -- and that ownership is part of at least one of those options. He declined to comment on last week’s Sirius Speedway report that he will join fellow Hoosier Tony Stewart at Stewart-Haas Racing next season, though sources now say that the deal is done and ready to be announced; most likely next weekend at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Newman said last month that he would not sign a new contract with Penske unless the team made significant improvements in performance. He is currently 16th in points after a tenth place finish Saturday night at Chicagoland Speedway.

Testing 1-2-3: NASCAR submitted a proposed 2009 testing policy to its teams Saturday night at Chicagoland, calling for 24 test days per team at tracks where the Sprint Cup Series competes. Each team would be allowed a maximum of two cars per test, with all of the team’s drivers able to test. No driver will be allowed to test for a team other than his own. The proposal also includes a one-week “blackout period” prior to each race, and an offseason testing ban from November 1 through January 15; not including the regularly schedule Daytona preseason tests.

Board Decides Speedway's Fate Tonight

Local attorney Doyle Fuller represents the homeowners, and says Montgomery Motor Speedway is now located on a floodplain. How can a track has been in existence since 1953 suddenly find itself in a floodplain? Well, apparently it’s been there all along, causing no problem at all. Despite that, the honorable Mr. Fuller is determined to see that the track never opens again.

In his words, “There are only so many structures you can put in an area like that, and we don't believe a racetrack is one of them."

According to Fuller, the track was operational when the area was first declared a floodplain, and was "grandfathered in" as an existing use facility. But when track owner Bill Manfull shut the speedway down three years ago, Fuller and his clients say he forfeited the track’s grandfathered status. He is demanding that the board treat Montgomery Motor Speedway as a new facility, and deny Crawford a permit to hold races there ever again.

Manfull isn’t going quietly, though. He points out that the law requires only that one race be held each year to maintain the track’s operational status. And he contends that he has met that obligation. He says he personally raced school buses and rental cars around the facility in each of the last three years, while leasing it to Hyundai as a parking lot for newly produced automobiles.

He told the Montgomery Advertiser, “All of that's racing. Nowhere does it say we've got to have a certain number of participants, or fans watching. (It) just says we have to have a race per year. We've done that."

So tonight, the Montgomery Board of Adjustment has a choice to make. They can knuckle under to the legal maneuvering of a small group of people who bought houses next door to a racetrack, without ever considering the possibility of actual racing. Or they can allow Rick Crawford to try and turn a rundown piece of undeveloped property into something the area can once again be proud of.

Harvick Wins At Oxford, DEI Penalty Upheld

Kevin Harvick turned his weekend off from Sprint Cup competition into a paid vacation yesterday, winning the 35th annual TD Banknorth 250 at Maine’s Oxford Plains Speedway.

Harvick dominated the second half of the event that was postponed by rain Sunday, besting Oxford Late Model regular Glen Luce and 19-year old Joey Polewarczyk Jr. to cash a $37,200 winner’s check. He took over from early leader Eddie MacDonald on a lap 126 restart, gave the lead back by a fender six laps later, then held off a late charge by Luce to claim the win.

Penalty Upheld: The National Stock Car Racing Commission has denied a Dale Earnhardt Inc. appeal of the penalties levied by NASCAR to Martin Truex, Jr.s team for infractions during Coke Zero 400 weekend at Daytona International Speedway.

NASCAR found that Truex’s car did not fit roof templates, docking the team and driver 150 points, fining crewchief Kevin Manion $100,000, and suspending Manion and carchief Gary Putnam for six races. DEI did not contest the violations, arguing instead that the penalties were too severe. The commission disagreed, with members Russell Hackett, Jack Housby and George Silbermann ruling unanimously that the violations were “clear-cut” and that the roof was “low across a broad area”

Terry Continues: Kyle Petty's midseason break will be extended for at least one more week. Petty’s job as an analyst for TNT ended last weekend, but replacement driver Terry Labonte will be in the car again Sunday at the Brickyard.

Spokesmen for the team say the move is to ensure that the #45 Dodge will be in the field Sunday -- since Labonte has a Past Champion's Provisional at his disposal – and is only temporary. Petty is expected to return to the car, most likely in two weeks at Pocono. He has an average finish of 34.3 this season, while Labonte has recorded an average finish of 27.5 in his six replacement races.

More details are coming to light on Stewart-Haas Motorsports’ plans for 2009. On last night’s edition of Tony Stewart Live on Sirius NASCAR Radio last night, Stewart said there are no plans for a third – or even a fourth – car next season, saying, “right now we're going to concentrate on getting these two Cup cars exactly where they need to be… before we expand."

Stremme In Catbird Seat For 2009 Cup Ride

Sam Hornish Jr. said yesterday that nobody has spoken to him about moving from Penske Racing’s No. 77 Dodge to replace the departing Ryan Newman next season, and that he has no idea who will ultimately end up in the ride. Sources close to the situation continue to tell Sirius Speedway that David Stremme is the leading candidate for the ride, but whether or not those sources are correct, it seems likely that Stremme will find his way back to the Sprint Cup ranks next season, one way or another.

Stremme has turned down a number of offers to return to the Sprint Cup Series this season -- holding out for a ride that he feels is capable of running up front -- while serving as a test driver for Penske Racing. All three Penske drivers -- Newman, Kurt Busch and Hornish -- have praised his work, as has Penske himself

When Dario Franchitti broke his ankle at Talladega this spring, Stremme was allowed to fill-in for only a single race, despite being offered a longer deal by Ganassi Racing. Most drivers in Stremme’s position have an “out clause” in their contract, allowing them to leave if a quality Cup ride becomes available. The lack of such a clause in Stremme’s contract – or at least his unwillingness to exercise it -- leads me to believe that he has job security at Penske that goes well beyond his current status as a test pilot. In short, I believe that Stremme may have already received a committment from Roger Penske for a full-time Cup ride in 2009.

Yet another option for career advancement landed on Stremme’s doorstep yesterday, when an executive for ABC/ESPN confirmed that Rusty Wallace could continue as a network analyst if he moves his race team to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. ESPN Vice President of Motorsports Rich Feinberg said yesterday that while the network did not allow Wallace to own a Cup team when he was first hired in 2006, the addition of team owners Ray Evernham and Brad Daugherty to the lineup has prompted a change in policy. Feinberg said, “The choice for Rusty to go into Cup racing is Rusty's, and we have relayed our position to him on that.”

Wallace has not yet commented publically on the possibility of RWI jumping to Cup in the near future. But if he does, Stremme will obviously be at the top of his list of potential drivers.

Wallace, Newman Still Sparring

Even after all these years, there’s apparently still no shortage of bad blood between Rusty Wallace and Ryan Newman. It bubbled to the surface again late last week, when Wallace claimed Newman was fired recently by team owner Roger Penske.

Newman has contended that the decision to part was mutual, but Wallace said, "That didn't happen. Roger Penske called Ryan Newman up to his office and said, 'I don't need your services next year.'” The former Sprint Cup Series champion claims Penske is angry with Newman’s recent criticism of the team, which has plummeted to 16th place in championship points after winning the season-opening Daytona 500. "I talked to Roger and he didn't like... all the negative stuff. Roger doesn't like anybody telling him his equipment is junk,” Wallace said. "Ryan and I never got along real well, that's for sure. We hyped forever and ever how (Newman) is an engineer… (but)they can't get that car figured out.

Told of Wallace’s comments, Newman scoffed, "Was he conscious when he said it? It doesn't matter to me. I know Rusty and his personalities - plural - and everybody is different. I don't know what Rusty's grounds are, or what he's trying to prove by saying that, (but) it wasn't the case, point-blank. Roger and I decided mutually not to continue, and it was more of my decision than it was his." Newman admitted talking plainly to Penske about what he sees as the shortcomings of the #12 team, saying such honesty is part of any successful operation. "Nobody likes to be criticized as a driver, nobody likes to be criticized as an owner, but constructive criticism is part of what I have to do as a driver," he said. "If I don't feel like I have good equipment -- or as good equipment as the guy who is ahead of me -- then I speak up.

NHRA PowerAde Drag Racing Series Funny Car driver Ron Capps will drive a NAPA-sponsored NASCAR Late Model in the companion event to the NASCAR Camping World Series championship finale in Roseville, Calif., on October 25.

Capps' and his NAPA Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car rank seventh in the NHRA championship chase with two races remaining, and he will make his asphalt Late Model debut in a car owned by NASCAR Camping World Series West team owner Bill McAnally. Capps has previously raced Late Models, Sprint cars, Midgets and open-wheeled sports cars in his career, and made Sirius Speedway history by ignoring the Godfather's advice and flipping his car sky-high in the Chili Bowl Midget Nationals a few years ago, breaking a bone in his shoulder.

Capps displayed the long-term memory loss caused by that wreck, saying, "Getting a call from Bil McAnally was awesome. I've always watched the team from afar...and the chance to go up there and drive is incredible. I just want to represent my sponsors well and not do anything stupid on the track.

Iowa Set For Spot On `09 Nationwide Schedule?

NASCAR Vice President of Racing Operations Steve O’Donnell confirmed what Sirius Speedway told you last week, that Iowa Speedway is being considered as a replacement for Mexico City on the 2009 Nationwide Series schedule.

NASCAR announced recently that the series will not return to Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez next season, and sources tell Sirius Speedway that Iowa will take its place. O’Donnell stopped short of confirming that, saying there are more than two tracks under consideration, but admitting that conversations have been had with officials at Iowa Speedway. He also said he expects the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal to be back on the 2009 schedule, which could be announced in as little as two weeks.

Pocono Stabbing Victim Critical: A 43-year old New York man remains in critical condition today, after being stabbed in the heart at Pocono Raceway Sunday. Police said Michael Gualtiere of Seaford, Long Island, N.Y., was treated at the track’s Infield Care Center at about 7 p.m., then flown to Lehigh Valley Hospital Center where he remains in critical condition after surgery.

Police have obtained a warrant to search a vehicle involved in the incident, and have identified what they call a “person of interest.” The investigation is ongoing.:

And Finally: There are reports today that P.J. Jones will drive the Hall of Fame Racing Toyota at Watkins Glen this weekend, in place of J.J. Yeley. Yeley failed to qualify on the road course at Infineon Raceway in June, and Jones recently tested the #96 Toyota at Road Atlanta. As of this morning, Yeley was still listed on the official Watkins Glen entry list.

Hall of Fame Racing has announced that NASCAR Nationwide Series driver Brad Coleman will make his NASCAR Sprint Cup Series debut in the No. 96 DLP HDTV Toyota Camry on Aug. 17th at Michigan International Speedway. Coleman replaces J.J. Yeley, who has been released by the team. P.J. Jones will drive the No. 96 Toyota this weekend at Watkins Glen.

Tom Garfinkel, co-owner of Hall of Fame Racing, said of the move, “J.J. is a talented race car driver and a great person, and this was a difficult decision to make. We all share responsibility that our performance hasn’t been what it needs to be, but we concluded it was time to make a change. This is a performance-based industry and we need to perform better.”

Yeley ranked 36th in points with just one Top-5 finish in 17 starts this season; a third at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in June. The No. 96 team has fallen out of the top 35 in owners points -- currently standing 38th -- and Yeley has failed to qualify for four races. The 20-year-old Coleman currently ranks 16th in the Nationwide Series championship point standings driving for Baker Curb Racing. He has also served as Hall Of Fame's Racing's test driver this season.

Smith Snubbed At The Glen: Dale Earnhardt Inc. has withdrawn its entry for Regan Smith’s No. 81 Chevrolet at Watkins Glen, after NASCAR informed the team that the effort violated NASCAR’s four-team limit.

Teams are allowed to enter a fifth car in a maximum of seven races per season, allowing a prospective rookie to gain experience in Sprint Cup competition. NASCAR said that Smith – who has made 20 starts this season – does not fit the criteria for a fifth-car exception.

Canadian Ron Fellows will now steer Smith’s #01 at the Glen with Smith sitting out. That decision effectively scuttled our grassroots bid to make Smith this week’s Fans’ Choice in the Sirius Driver-to-Crew Chat Channel voting. We’ll see what we can do about getting him back in the running next week.

Kentucky Sale Now Questionable: Speedway Motorsports Inc. has less than three weeks to decide whether to carry on with its plan to purchase Kentucky Speedway, and company officials now say they are unsure what the final decision will be.

SMI Chief Financial Officer Bill Brooks told financial analysts yesterday, “The Kentucky due diligence is ongoing right now, and it’s not complete. I can’t answer definitively whether or not we will go forward with the transaction.” A final decision must be made by August 18th, and Chairman Bruton Smith has repeatedly insisted that he will go forward with the $78-million purchase of the track, which now hosts the NASCAR Nationwide and Craftsman Truck Series, and the Indy Racing League.

Logano To Make Cup Debut At Richmond

The plan is finally in place for Joey Logano to begin his NASCAR Sprint Cup Series career, with a handful of races scheduled this season in Joe Gibbs Racing Toyotas. A source close to the team said Saturday that Logano will run “six or seven” Sprint Cup races with sponsorship from Gatorade between now and the end of the 2008 campaign, in an effort to gain NASCAR approval for Logano to run for Raybestos Rookie of the Year honors next season.

Plans call for the 18-year old Connecticut native to make his Sprint Cup debut at Richmond International Raceway on September 6th, with additional races to be announced within the next 2-3 weeks. He will also run the ARCA ReMax Series race at Talladega Superspeedway for Venturini Motorsports, to satisfy NASCAR requirements for him to compete in the 2009 Daytona 500.

McDowell Replaced At MIS: Mike Skinner will drive Michael Waltrip Racing’s #00 Champion Mortgage Toyota at Michigan this weekend, replacing Michael McDowell. McDowell admitted last weekend at Watkins Glen that he is investigating his options for next season, since Michael Waltrip Racing currently has no sponsorship on the car for 2009.

Today, Michael Waltrip said Skinner will remain in the car for the upcoming races at Bristol and California. “We’ve asked Mike Skinner to evaluate areas where we can improve our on-track performance," he said. "We feel the same way about Michael McDowell as we did when we signed him, but this is the toughest, most competitive form of racing in the world, and I know Michael and MWR can benefit from Skinner’s input.”

McDowell is scheduled to return to the car at Richmond International Raceway in Setpember, and said he supports the team’s decision.

“No driver wants to get out of the car, but I understand that every part of our program needs to be evaluated, and that certainly includes me. I plan to support Mike Skinner and our team any way I can, and hopefully learn some things that will help when I get back in the car."

Skinner previously subbed for AJ Allmendinger at Team Red Bull for a number of races this season, allowing that team to right itself. Since returning to the cockpit, Allmendinger has surged in the Spring Cup standings, climbing into the Top-35 in owners' points for the first time in his career.

Mears/RCR Close To A Deal: Expect an announcement as early as this weekend that Casey Mears will join Richard Childress Racing next season as the team’s fourth driver. Details of the deal are expected to be finalized this week, with an announcement Friday or Saturday at Michigan International Speedway.

Mears will be tabbed to drive RCR’s #07 Jack Daniels Chevrolet next season, with Clint Bowyer moving to a new, #33 Chevrolet with sponsorship from Cheerios and Betty Crocker. The ride swap became necessary when General Mills – parent company of Cheerios and Betty Crocker – balked at sponsoring Mears, who is currently backed by rival Kellogg’s at Hendrick Motorsports.

RCR will petition NASCAR to transfer owner points from the #07 to the #33 at season’s end, so Bowyer will have a guaranteed starting spot in the first five races of 2009. Mears will be forced to qualify on time for the first five events of the season, and said Sunday that while he is not anxious to put himself in that situation, he would be willing to do so, “on a team that had the personnel and equipment to make the car fast enough to qualify.”

Mears insisted that there is no signed deal between himself and Childress. “I always try to be up front about this stuff,” said Mears, “but the fact is, nothing is signed and I'm still talking to other teams.” Asked if he might have an announcement by the end of the week, he said, "I certainly hope so. The sooner the better.”

Silly Season Still Going Strong

Ryan Newman is finally confirmed as Tony Stewart's 2009 teammate at Stewart-Haas Racing, but there is still a bit of silliness left in NASCAR Silly Season 2008.

A spokesman for Joey Logano confirmed this weekend that the 18-year old driver will likely make his NASCAR Sprint Cup Series debut next month at Richmond International Raceway. Sirius Speedway reported two weeks ago that Logano will make his Cup debut at Richmond in a Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota; the first of a planned 6-7 race schedule in preparation for a full Rookie of the Year bid in 2009. Spokesman Bill Janitz said the number of races to be run this season is still to be determined, and that no decision has been made on whether he will replace Tony Stewart in JGR’s #20 Toyota next season.

A source close to the team told Sirius Speedway Saturday that Logano will run an orange-and-white #02 Toyota at Richmond with sponsorship from the Home Depot. In addition, that source said the home improvement giant will back the Connecticut youngster in his freshman season of Cup competition in 2009. Team President J.D. Gibbs said the team has not yet finalized plans for Logano, saying, “He'll run some Cup races this year, whether or not he's running the full thing next year or not.”

At least one more vacant seat appears set to be filled this week. Richard Childress would not confirm widespread reports that Casey Mears will be the driver of his new fourth Chevrolet next year, but smiled as he said, “I'll be glad to talk to you about the fourth car next week at Bristol."

Penske Racing spokesman Walter Czarnecki confirmed that David Stremme is one of several drivers being considered to replace Ryan Newman in the No. 12 Dodge next season, adding that "there's a lot of balls still in the air right now.” Czarnecki said the team hopes to have a driver signed within the next two weeks.

Yates Racing is making a concerted bid to sign driver Paul Menard away from Dale Earnhardt, Inc., with the assistance of Roush Fenway Racing. Roush Fenway President Geoff Smith confirmed yesterday that the Roush/Yates alliance is pursuing Menard, saying, “We believe we're the leading contender outside of the incumbent." DEI officials say they are negotiating to re-sign Menard, and feel confident he will return to the team.

Hamlin Blasts JGR Engines: Denny Hamlin lashed out at his Joe Gibbs Racing team yesterday, after an engine failure with six laps remaining dropped him to a 39th place finish. Hamlin now stands 12th in the Sprint Cup standings -- just 26 points away from dropping out of the Chase -- and blamed the JGR engine shop for his predicament.

“We're so far behind," he said. "When we come to the racetrack with a piece that’s got more power, we just hope it lasts. And it just hasn’t yet.”

Hamlin also questioned the team’s decision to run a new engine combination at Michigan Sunday, saying, “We just make stupid choices. We came here with a new engine package, (and) we're a bubble driver. We can't keep our cars together. At this point, we don’t even deserve to be in the Chase. I know the engine guys are doing all they can to keep up, (but) the Hendrick guys seem to be the class of the field right now as far as engines.”

Hamlin has now finished 23rd or worse in eight of his last 14 races.

Batten Down The Hatches, It's Going To Be A Crazy Week

I spent Sunday afternoon at my favorite local short track; Thunder Road International Speedbowl in Barre, VT. Before I had made it to the pit gate at 9 AM, a fan asked, "Who do you think was at fault in the Kyle Busch/Dale Jr. crash last night?"

"I don't think it was anyone's fault," I replied. "But I know who's going to get blamed!"

Junior and Kyle said essentially the same thing in their respective post-race interviews. Saturday night's late-race tangle was unfortunate, it was regrettable, and it was a racing accident. That view was echoed by eventual winner Clint Bowyer, who had the best view of anyone in the house, and by every TV and radio commentator on site.

The fan reaction, of course, was completely different.

By the time Sirius NASCAR Radio hit the air with it's Post-Race Show mere minutes after the checkered flag, the indignant inhabitants of Earnhardt Nation were lined up 10-deep to vent their collective spleen. Kyle Busch, they said, was Charles Manson, Adolph Hitler and the Unibomber; all rolled into one skinny, detestable little package. They called on NASCAR to throw him out of Saturday night's race, suspend him for his transgressions, or better yet, take him out behind the trailer and have him shot.

It continued for the remainder of the evening, and ramped up again the

moment the phone lines reopened on Sunday morning. I'll bet the mortgage that Mike Bagley and David Poole will fill the Monday morning hours with it on "The Morning Drive," followed by four more hours of venom on "Tradin' Paint" with Steve Post and Chocolate Myers. Then it'll be my turn on "Sirius Speedway."

I know what's coming, and I have prepared myself in advance for it:

Caller #1 will ask (with great indignance) when NASCAR is going to "do something about Kyle Busch."

Caller #2 will announce that he Tivo'ed Saturday night's race, and that after 167 viewings of his personal, super-slow-motion replay, he has determined that Busch intentionally turned right to wreck Earnhardt.

Caller #3 will say he wishes Steven Wallace had decked Busch when Shrubby stuck his head in Wallace's car following Friday night's Nationwide Series race.

Caller #4 will opine that Mr. and Mrs. Busch are horrible parents, since both Kurt and Kyle are immature, egotistical, and the greatest threat to our American way of life since the atomic bomb.

Caller #5 will accuse me of being a Kyle apologist; adding that everyone he knows agrees that Busch intentionally took Earnhardt out, and that I am nothing more than a NASCAR mouthpiece.

I will remain calm, composed and tolerant throughout my four-hour ordeal, understanding that at the very least, this most recent controversy will sell a crapperload of tickets for next Saturday night's race at Darlington Raceway.

Kansas Wants Second Cup Date; Announces Casino Plan

Kansas Speedway will petition NASCAR for a second NASCAR Sprint Cup Series date for the track, if approval is obtained for a proposed 1.5 million square-foot Hard Rock Hotel & Casino on speedway grounds.

The project -– located in the speedway’s Second Turn -- would include a 300-room luxury hotel, a state-of-the-art casino with 3,000 slot machines and 140 gaming tables, 275,000 square-feet of retail, dining and entertainment space and meeting and convention facilities. The project will cost over $700 million, with no public incentives or revenue needed.

A study commissioned by the speedway indicates that the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino would provide an economic benefit of $4.86 billion to the community over 20 years. The proposal includes a temporary casino what would open within eight months, and operate during the construction period.

International Speedway Corporation is not commenting on which of its other tracks would lose a Sprint Cup date to Kansas. ISC President Lesa France Kennedy said she would move one of ISC’s current Cup dates to Kansas, beginning in 2010 or 2011. Seven ISC tracks -- Daytona, Richmond, California, Talladega, Martinsville, Michigan and Phoenix -- currently host two Cup dates each season. Four others -- Darlington, Homestead-Miami, Watkins Glen and Chicagoland – host one each.

`Dega's A Deal: A study commissioned by Talladega Superspeedway shows that the track generates an annual economic impact of $407 million for the region and the state of Alabama. The study, done by the Washington Economics Group Inc., shows that Talladega creates 7,955 jobs, and generates an economic impact equivalent to 11% of Alabama's total tourism revenue. The total economic impact translates to $88.50 for every man, woman and child in Alabama.

And Finally: It’s been interesting to read all the breathless reports in the last few days of Ryan Newman moving to Stewart-Haas Racing next season, especially since Sirius Speedway first broke the news on July 7th. That’s the same day we told you that Tony Stewart would drive a #14 Chevrolet at Stewart-Haas next season, with sponsorship from Office Depot and Old Spice. Since then, virtually every media outlet in the country has claimed to “break” those stories, despite the fact that we’ve been telling you about them for more than a month.

CONFIRMED: Texaco-Havoline Will Not Return in 2009

Sirius Speedway has learned that Chevron-Texaco will not return as sponsor of Juan Pablo Montoya’s #42 Dodge next season. The Texaco-Havoline brand is in the final year of its sponsorship contract with Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates, and a media representative for Ganassi Racing confirmed the move this afternoon.

Texaco-Havoline will not move to another team in 2009, electing instead to end their longstanding involvement in NASCAR. That decision leaves Ganassi Racing in need of at least two new sponsors in 2009, and possibly three. Team owner Chip Ganassi recently parked the #40 Dodge driven by Dario Franchitti due to lack of sponsorship, and there are longstanding rumors that Target may not return to the #41 Dodge currently driven by Reed Sorenson.

The Hammer Falls On Joe Gibbs Racing

NASCAR has indefinitely suspended seven Joe Gibbs Racing crewmembers for their parts in attempting to manipulate the results of a post-race chassis dyno test at Michigan International Speedway Saturday.

No. 20 crewchief Dave Rogers, carchief Richard Bray and engine tuner Dan Bajek were all suspended indefinitely, along with No. 18 crewchief Jason Ratcliff, carchief Dorian Thorsen, engine tuner Michael Johnson and crewmember Toby Bigelow. Drivers Joey Logano and Tony Stewart have been penalized 150 championship points, and placed on NASCAR probation until December 31st. Car owner Joe Gibbs was penalized 150 owner points for each car. In addition, all remaining members of both teams have been placed on NASCAR probation until December 31st.

JGR’s No. 20 team still leads the owners points by 168 over the No. 2 Richard Childress Racing team.

NASCAR cited four different violations, as outlined in the 2009 Nationwide Series rulebook:

Sections 12-4-A, the omnipresent "Actions detrimental to stock car racing.

"Section 8-9, which reads, "From time to time, NASCAR may determine, in the interest of competition, that it is necessary or appropriate to undertake an analysis of the performance capabilities of a car, car part, component or equipment. The Competitor shall take whatever steps are requested by NASCAR Officials for this purpose.

"Section 12-4-Q, which states, "Car, car parts, components and/or equipment used that do not conform to NASCAR rules… has not been approved by NASCAR prior to the event, or is not required for the normal functional operation of the race car, or has been altered to detract from or compromise its integrity or effectiveness, whether operational or not.

"And finally, Section 12-4-K, which reads, "When NASCAR Officials mandate inspection during the Event, if any car, car parts, components, and/or equipment which have been used in the Event are taken from the racing premises without permission of a NASCAR Official, or are tampered with by any member of the team or anyone associated with the team.

" In layman’s terms, Sections 12-4-Q and 12-4-K are the most applicable to this case. Section 12-4-Q effectively says that teams cannot place parts on the car that are not required for normal function during the race. JGR clearly did this, after the race was over.

Section 12-4-K says teams cannot tamper with their cars prior to (or during) post-race inspection, without NASCAR's permission. That clearly happened Saturday.

JGR has the right to appeal the ruling to the National Stock Car Racing Commission, but JD Gibbs said Sunday that the team would accept whatever penalties were handed down.

For those who wonder what "indefinite suspension" means in the world of NASCAR, the seven suspended team members are now in the same boat as Shane Hmiel and Aaron Fike. They are suspended from competition, with no set timetable for reinstatement. They may apply to NASCAR for reinstatement at any time, with the sanctioning body determining when (and if) they come back. They seven crewmen can continue to work for in the Joe Gibbs Racing shop, but cannot enter any NASCAR-sanctioned facility until their suspensions are lifted.

What it is

2010 Ford Transit Connect – 2008 Chicago Auto Show: Much like the traditional soccer mom, many business owners find themselves driving vehicles that are much larger than their needs dictate. But unlike those dwellers of suburbia, the proprietor is paying for the maintenance and fuel for a full-sized van not necessarily by choice but rather because of a lack of smaller and relatively efficient alternatives. Ford aims to address that dilemma when it launches the Transit Connect in mid-2009. With its small size, 143 cubic feet of cargo room, configurable interior, and 2.0-liter engine that’s estimated to return 19 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway, the Turkey-built Transit should meet the needs of city-dwelling entrepreneurs everywhere.

What It Looks Like

When it hits U.S. streets in 2009, the Ford Transit Connect will certainly stand alone. It has the face of a Ford sedan with Fusion-like headlights, but behind that the large windshield rises to meet a high roof that extends over the cargo area. Sliding doors on each side can be all steel or fitted with glass panels, the rear doors open to 270 degrees, and the overall footprint is similar to that of a small car. The interior of the models on display at the Chicago Auto Show were rather drab (perfect for a business van), with hard yet seemingly durable plastics and basic manually-adjusted bucket seats.

What Ford Says

According to Ford’s vice president of Global Product Development, Derrick Kuzak, “Ford Transit Connect is built on a dedicated, commercial vehicle platform to meet the rigors business use demands. This workhorse is like nothing available today in the American market.” He goes on to explain, “More than ever before, consumers are making the bulk of their purchases from the Internet and smaller, specialty businesses, which is increasing the volume of small package deliveries. Transit Connect is ideally suited to meet those delivery needs because of its flexible package, compact size and fuel-efficient powertrain. It will make the delivery process for small business owners easier and more affordable.”

What We Think

Styling-challenged and bare-bones may not be the way to go with personal cars, but we think these traits make a lot of sense for small work vehicles like the Ford Transit Connect. How quickly the Transit catches on remains to be seen, but it’s already got at least two things going for it – it’s bigger than the equally ugly Scion xB, and it offers a lot more versatility than the Chevrolet HHR Panel Van. However, if the Transit Connect just doesn't meet your needs, fret not -- there's always the 2008 Ford F-650/Alton Manufacturing XUV, with a Caterpillar engine and price tag of roughly $190,000, that should haul, pull, or utterly destroy anything you could think of.

More information has surfaced on the story we first discussed yesterday; that two-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Tony Stewart is working on a deal to jump from Joe Gibbs Racing to Haas CNC Racing next season. Both ESPN.com and Sports Illustrated’s website -- SI.com – say Stewart will be given partial ownership in Haas CNC Racing, in exchange for his agreement to drive for the team, beginning in 2008.

Stewart’s contract with JGR runs through the 2009 campaign, making a move before then extremely complicated, if not impossible. Stewart's PR spokesman, Mike Arning, admitted as much yesterday, saying, “He's there this year, and he's there next year. I know for a fact that JGR is interested in retaining Tony for 2010 and beyond. They'd like him to retire at Joe Gibbs Racing. As Tony's said many times, 'Nothing's broke. Why change it?'”

The reports persist, however, saying that Stewart has begun talks with JGR officials to obtain a release from the final year of his contract. Team President J.D. Gibbs made it clear that he expects Stewart to honor his contract to the letter, saying, “The reality is, he's racing here through 2009. There's no ifs, ands or buts about that one. Our stance is he's racing for us through 2009."

The reported deal has Stewart receiving as much as a 50% ownership stake in Haas-CNC Racing, while also being paid to drive one of their two Chevrolets. Haas-CNC General Manager Joe Custer admitted today that he has spoken with several parties about the future of the team, including Stewart's representatives. That admission contradicts the statements of Haas-CNC spokesman Ron Mench, who said yesterday that there has been no communication with Stewart. Custer said that no deal has been reached, but that he would be “interested in discussing a partnership with a driver of (Stewart’s) caliber."

If the move happens, Stewart would return to the Chevrolet camp after a year with Toyota. Many observers point to Stewart’s ongoing relationship with Chevrolet -– which supplies engines to his open wheel midget and sprint car teams -– as a major factor in his decision to bolt JGR. However, Stewart drove JGR Chevrolets for many years, while receiving Mopar engines and financial backing for his short track programs.
